At Marble & Stone Restoration we're fully aware that maintaining your natural stone & tiles can be difficult & at times frustrating. This is why we have developed & refined a comprehensive range of services for the restoration of natural stone & tiles.

How can we prevent your marble floors, benchtops, stairs & vanities from becoming dirty, stained & dull.

Sealing

The most important thing we can do is to seal your marble. This is absolutely vital to prevent serious problems such as staining, efflorescence, flaking & discolouration. It is also important that we seal your marble surfaces with a high quality
penetrating sealer such as our solvent based sealant that comes with a 15 year product warranty.

Cleaners
We can also help to ensure you're cleaning your marble surfaces with the right products. This is vital in maintaining the polish, look & feel of your marble surfaces. An all to common occurrence is marble areas being cleaned with the wrong products causing streaking & damage to the polish of the marble. Thankfully our specially formulated marble cleaners are designed for everyday cleaning and for those hard to keep clean areas such as showers. All of our cleaning products come with easy to understand instructions and if necessary in home demonstrations are available. For more care advise on natural stone cleaning please click here

THE FOLLOWING ARE THE MOST COMMON ISSUES OUR CLIENTS FACE WITH THERE NATURAL STONE SURFACES

Wear
The loss of the high polish on certain marble & granite surfaces can be attributed to wear. This is especially true of marble, since it is much softer than granite. When shoes track in dirt & sand, the bottoms of the shoes can act like sandpaper on a stone floor surface & over time will wear the polish off. A stone restoration professional can restore the polish. Polishing

Etching
The dull, whitish spot created when liquids containing acids are spilled on marble is called etching. Marble, travertine & limestone etch very easily. Granite is very acid-resistant and will rarely etch. To prevent etching, avoid using cleaners and chemicals that contain acids. Marble & Stone Restoration can remove etching with our polishing processes. Repolishing

Stains
Staining is a common occurrence with most natural stones that either haven't been sealed or are no longer sealed properly. Many foods, drinks, ink, oil and rust can cause staining to your natural stone surfaces. Staining will require our specially formulated poultice paste which will attempt to remove or improve the stained areas. Stain Removal

Efflorescence
Efflorescence appears as a white powdery residue on the surface of the stone. It is a common condition on new stone installations or when the stone is exposed to a large quantity of water, such as flooding. This powder is a mineral salt from the setting bed, which when dried on the surface of the stone crystallizes. In most cases efflorescence can be removed from the stone but will not stop occurring until all moisture is evaporated. This can take anywhere from a week to years. To have efflorescence removed please feel free to contact us today. Contact

Spalling, Flaking and Pitting
If your stone is developing small pits or small pieces of stone are popping off the surface (spalling) then you have a problem. This condition is common on stone exposed to large amounts of water. This is extremely common in & around showers where the area is constantly getting wet & then drying out. Like efflorescence, mineral salts are the cause for spalling and pitting. Instead of the salts depositing on the surface they deposit below the surface of the stone, causing pressure within the stone. If this is an issue you or your clients are facing please feel free to contact us today.

Yellowing
There are a number of reasons why your natural stone might turn yellow. A common issue is the discolouration of old wax or lacquer coatings that are applied to floor areas or bench tops. Some stones, particularly the lighter coloured ones such as Carrara and Calacatta marble also contain an iron content. This can cause rusting of the stone especially in wet areas. This is why all natural stone surfaces need to be sealed with a premium sealer to protect your investment.

Uneven Tile (Lippage)
Lippage is the term given to tiles that are set unevenly. In other words, the edge of one tile is higher than the next and is due to poor installation. If the lippage is higher than 3mm it is considered excessive and the tile will have to be resurfaced by a restoration contractor to flatten the floor. Floor levelling is ideal for creating a seamless look to your natural stone surfaces.

Chips & Cracks
Cracks in stone can be caused by settling, poor installation, inadequate underlying support or excessive vibration. Chips can result from a bad installation or when a heavy object falls on a vulnerable corner. Repairs can be completed by using either our colour matched two part epoxy resin or our UV light repair kit which is designed to create a near invisible repair. This is ideal for the repair of granite, marble, tiles & engineered stone such as caesar stone, essa stone & quantum quartz. Chip & Crack Repairs

White Impact Marks
Impact marks appear as white marks on the surface of the stone and are common in certain types of marble. These white marks are the result of tiny explosions inside the crystal of the stone. Pin point pressures placed on the marble cause these marks. High heel shoes or blunt pointed instruments are common reasons for impact marks. Impact marks can be difficult to remove. Repolishing or resurfacing can reduce the number of impact marks but some travel through the entire thickness of the stone & can't be removed.

Water Rings/Spots
Water rings and spots are very common on marble and other natural stone surfaces. They are areas that have become etched due to hard water minerals such as calcium & magnesium that are left behind when water evaporates, leaving a ring or a spot. These etch marks can be removed so please feel free to contact us today to arrange an onsite inspection.
